Merrell Bare Access Flex
The Bare Access Flex 2 lives up to its name by being one of Merrell’s contributions to the world of minimalist running shoes, in this case trail running. Like other minimalist options that seek to emphasize the foot’s natural contours and gait as opposed to wrapping it in foam, this shoe has a 0mm heel toe drop and just enough EVA foam in the midsole to provide protection and comfort. This foam is Merrell’s patented EVA FlexConnect, featuring an indentation in the heel they call a Hyperlock to provide heel stability on descents and sharp turns and flex grooves in the forefoot to guide the foot forward as you rack up miles. The Flex 2’s upper is devoid of any overlays, leaving the brand’s Barefoot 2 synthetic mesh and glove-like fit to provide the lightest in structure and support. As a result, the multidirectional grooves allow for movement and adaptability as well as traction without utilizing heavy lugs for grip. The minimalist shoe movement has finally reached trail runners and the very features that make the Flex 2 unique are what also make it a great crossover to road running.
